“…regard one another as more important than yourselves…”
(Phil. 2:3)

How do we live in unity? How do we walk together as a team? Paul sums it up with one simple idea—put Jesus first and others second.

When we put Jesus first, He changes the way we see ourselves resulting in a change in the we see others.

To explain and apply this, Paul paints a clear contrast. It says what it is not and describes what it is:

  • NOT selfishly seeking self-glory BUT regarding others more important.
  • NOT focused on my interests BUT focused on needs of others.

Seeking self-glory never holds up. Even those without Christ can see it. Some may be attracted to it for a while…people like to be around “important” people, so they can feel important. But, even then, it wears out quickly.

Look at the source of arguments and strife—someone is seeking self-glory and running over others to get it.

What causes synergy and team? When people lay down self-centered agendas and focus on helping each other reach the common goal. It is a principle of God’s created order. Those without Christ can do it temporarily. Certainly it is possible for people without Christ to agree on a shared goal (a work project, a sports team, etc.). But, even in the best of goals from this world, the agreement is temporary.

In Christ, we are called to make it our lifestyle! Because Jesus has come to live in our hearts, we now have supernatural love. Our focus has changed. We are not living to please ourselves; we are living to serve others.

Take a moment and reflect on your focus. Consider these questions:

    • Would those closest to you say that you are usually self-centered?
    • Would your friends and family say that you have your own agenda and never consider the needs of others?
    • Are you learning to hear the prompting of God’s Spirit as He challenges you to notice the needs of those around you?
